Tasting notes

Bright yellow-green, silver reflections. Delicately smoky, a touch of orange zest, yellow stone fruit nuances, mineral touch. Finesse-rich, filigree-looking style, mineral and fresh, salty touch, elegant food companion me sure maturity potential.

Vineyard & Cellar

After careful grape selection by hand picking in the last days of October and a meticulous sorting out Botrytis, the healthy grapes were gently rubbed and pressed gently after about 5 hours of maceration at very cool temperatures with a pneumatic press. Fermentation with naturally occurring yeasts took place 100% in steel tanks. After a few months of storage of the finished wine on the lees, it was bottled in June 2018.

Vintage

A rather cooler winter was followed by a very mild March, which led to a dangerous early sprouting. However, the April was below average cool, so the expulsion was very slow, unfortunately again with slight frost damage in the sensitive varieties Chardonnay and Zweigelt, but significantly lower than in the frosty year 2016. The first use of burning straw bales helped here certainly the damage in To keep borders. May and also June showed an early summer friendliness and ensured a trouble-free flowering in the first half of June. The precipitation was rare and little extensive and so we came in a rather hot summer with little rain. Occasional thunderstorms saved the vines through the summer, which goes down in history as the third hottest since records began. An early start of harvesting in the first days of September was necessary to maintain the acidity and freshness of the wines, because this was particularly important to us. September, however, was unusually cold with some heavy rainfall, which fortunately had a very positive effect on the vines, as well as on the quality of the grapes. The harvest was thus pulled apart much more and ended in mid-October with very high quality both in white wine, as well as red wine, lighter wines, as well as the rich layered wines. The vintage 2016 shines with intense fruit, ripe acidity and is not as lush as expected due to the earlier harvest, but very elegant with lots of drinking pleasure.

Soil

The Nußberg has always been considered the most famous vineyard in Vienna, and in its center is the Rosengartel. This filet piece of Nussberg is planted among other things with ancient Riesling sticks, which produce a particularly mineral and multi-faceted Riesling and thus express the terroir of the Viennese Nußbergs in an outstanding way. In 2008, I switched this vineyard to biodynamic agriculture and with the 2011 vintage, it is now fully certified. The soil here consists mainly of extremely calcareous weathering of limestone and sandstone with a medium clay content.
