Tasting notes

On the nose fine herbs and spices with yellow fruit nuances, tobacco, dark minerality. Juicy on the palate, complex, elegant, extract sweet texture, fine acidity, mineral and persistent. A finesse-rich food companion, which harmonises particularly well with the classic Viennese cuisine such as cumin roast, boiled beef and fried sweetbreads.

Vineyard & Cellar

The grapes come from biodynamic agriculture and were harvested very late, towards the end of October. Golden yellow, physiologically perfectly ripe fruits, without any signs of Botrytis, or other adverse effects, were harvested by hand picking and then pressed gently after four hours of mash time. The pre-clarified musts were fermented slightly cooled in a steel tank without the addition of pure-breeding yeasts, in order to give as unfish as possible all the grape-like aromas to unfold. After 6 months of storage on fine lees, it was bottled in May 2017.

Vintage

An average winter was followed by a somewhat later sprouting and by the end of April unfortunately a massive late frost. Especially the locations on the Bisamberg and here especially those varieties that were already more expelled like Chardonnay or the Zweigelt, hit it hard. The affected vineyards have recovered well during the year, but the yields have remained very modest. The bloom around mid-June was in glorious weather without disturbances and then followed a mixed summer with moderate temperatures and a lot of rain. Especially the young plants have enjoyed the frequent rain and grew as never before. However, the permanent moisture in the vineyard was also very beneficial for the various diseases, such as Oidium and Peronospora. Thanks to the tireless efforts of my team in the foliage work, we did not have to suffer any major damage. September was especially nice, dry and warm. The harvest started early and brought fully ripe grapes. From the first days of October, autumn came very suddenly with cold temperatures, an ideal time for the reading of the layer wines. 2016 is a vintage with good concentration and playful fruit, very aromatic. Exciting for white as well as red wines.

Soil

The Ried Kaasgraben is located in Sievering, about three kilometers west of the Nußberg and thus much further away from the Danube. The vineyard is also already a bit higher and closer to the Vienna Woods, this causes much stronger day – night temperature differences. The soils are very calcareous sandstone weathering soils with little clay content. The vineyard is about 50 years old and is inclined to south-south-east.
